What is Reform Zionism?
Reform Zionism is inseparable from Reform Judaism. Reform Jews believe that Judaism is a religious civilization.
Our identity as a people is rooted in the land of Israel.
The rebirth of Israel is a modern miracle. It allows us as a nation to construct our own state according to the prophetic ideals of compassion and justice.
Aliyah is a mitzvah, the highest expression of our ideal, an opportunity to fully participate in the grand experiment. This in no way diminishes the need for, or role of, the Diaspora. Reform Jews will continue to live outside the land and create great communities.
The Jewish communities in and outside of Israel share a common faith and fate. Each needs the other and must work towards the redemption of humankind.
Spiritual redemption is an ongoing process that can occur both in the Diaspora and in Israel through living in accord with the highest Jewish values. Israel and the Diaspora have mutual obligations to support one another.
Israel must be a democratic, pluralistic, Jewish state that wields power with justice and compassion, guarantees equal rights to all its citizens and protects the rights of ethnic, religious, sexual, and other minorities.
The people and the land of Israel are sanctified through mitzvot that lead to tikkun ha-nefesh (repair of the soul), tikkun ha-am (repair of the people) and tikkun ha-olam (repair of the world).
Our commitment to land and people is unconditional, but we must stress the convenantal demand that Jews in Israel apply the highest moral principles of the Torah and the Prophets to contemporary life.
Hebrew is the sacred language of the Jewish people, miraculously revived as the common speech of the State of Israel. Learning Hebrew is an essential mitzvah for the comprehension, preservation and development of our unic civilization.
For Reform Zionists Israel's national holidays are sacred, Yom Ha-Zikaron (Memorial Day for those who died in defense of Israel) and Yom Ha-Atzmaut (Israel Independence Day) should be observed with appropriate prayers and mitzvot in both Israel and the Diaspora. Our worship services should contain prayers for the welfare of Israel.
For Reform Zionists Israel's rebirth confirms God's redemptive role in history, and is best described in the difficult and ambiguous phrase reishit tzmichat ge'ulateinu, the beginning of the flowering of our redemption.If you are interested to read more about Reform Zionism, please click here in order to download Rabbi David W. Jerusalem Program 2004
-----------------------------
Zionism, the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, brought about the establishment of the State of Israel, and views a Jewish, Zionist, democratic and secure State of Israel to be the expression of the common responsibility of the Jewish people for its continuity and future.
The foundations of Zionism are:
1. The unity of the Jewish people, its bond to its historic homeland Eretz Yisrael, and the centrality of the State of Israel and Jerusalem, its capital, in the life of the nation;
2. Aliyah to Israel from all countries and the effective integration of all immigrants into Israeli Society.
3. Strengthening Israel as a Jewish, Zionist and democratic state and shaping it as an exemplary society with a unique moral and spiritual character, marked by mutual respect for the multi-faceted Jewish people, rooted in the vision of the prophets, striving for peace and contributing to the betterment of the world.
4. Ensuring the future and the distinctiveness of the Jewish people by furthering Jewish, Hebrew and Zionist education, fostering spiritual and cultural values and teaching Hebrew as the national language;
5. Nurturing mutual Jewish responsibility, defending the rights of Jews as individuals and as a nation, representing the national Zionist interests of the Jewish people, and struggling against all manifestations of anti-Semitism;
6. Settling the country as an expression of practical Zionism.
Our goals:
1. Strenghtening ties between Israel and Hungarian Jews, those belonging to Reform- and Progressive Judaism or to the secular public.
2. Organizing lectures, study groups, round table events, hasbarot, enhancing Jewish-Zionist community life
3. Furthering mutual understanding and friendship between Israel and the Republic of Hungary
4. Correct coverage of Israel-related news, putting the spotlight on unbalanced media coverages related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
5. Monitoring and neutralizing antisemitic phenomena
Our principles:
Equality of men and women in all areas of privale, public, and religious life, including Jewish practices and rites
Streaming for peace and "tikun olam"
We are against the discrimination of people based on ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation
Division between State and religion in a more democratic State of Israel where all Jewish religious streams are equal and the rights of secular Israelis are respected. We support the option for civil marriage
The 2nd General Meeting of Arzenu Hungary agreed in the following points regarding the future of Jerusalem and the Jewish settlements :
Jerusalem must continue to serve as the eternal and united capital city of Israel
East Jerusalem cannot be considered a "settlement" based on Israeli Law, it is an integral part of Greater Jerusalem. There are no legal and internationally banding obligations from before 1968 forcing Israel to divide the city in order to create on its Eastern part an Arab-Palestinian capital city.
The existing UN resolution on Eastern Jerusalem does not recognise the "occupation" of Eastern Jerusalem by Israel, neither the creation of an Arab-Palestinian capital city in the municipal territory. Since 1968 Eastern Jerusalem has increased to its double size where at least 40% of the population is Jewish. We support urban development on the entire territory of Greater Jerusalem to the benefit of both Jews and Arabs.
Dividing Jerusalem would not serve the interests of peace and it may have potential risks for future agreements between the parties.
Arzenu Hungary considers the whole of Eretz Israel a Jewish land from both historical and cultural point of view, however we are realists and understand that Israel cannot and should not rule over millions of Arabs.
This would harm the national interests of Israel, the Jewish majority character of the State, as well the peace process in the Middle East.
We agree that Israel should withdraw from 94-95% of the West Bank but only after and based on satisfactory security guarantees. The three major Jewish urban areas of the YESHA region (Ariel, Ma'ale Adumim, Gush Etzion) should belong to Israel in the future.
The above solution would guarantee Israel's national security as well the human and national rights of the Palestinian people.
